When we think of a unicorn, we think of a magical white horse whith a long spiralled horn on its head. But the first written description of a unicorn, in 400 BC, was very different. When Ctesias, a Greek doctor, visited Persia (Iran), Indian travellers told him of fast and powerful unicorn, with a red head, a white body and a red white black horn.
Unicorn myths
In medieval times, Europeans belived unicorns were real animals that symbolized rarity and purity. They belived only virgins could approach unicorns, as you can see in the 15th-century tapestry series, ''The Lady and the Unicorn''. For the Chinese, the unicorn, or qilin, has the head of a dragon, the body of a deer, and one or more horns. But is considered a peaceful creature that brings good luck!
A royal symbol
The unicorn is Scotland's national animal. It was adopted by the Scottish crown in the 15th century as a symbol of a royal coat of arms has a lion for England and unicorn in gold chains for Scotland.
Unicorn food
Unicorns have also inspired food and drink. You can find unicorn bagels,sushi rolls and cakes. In 2017, Starbucks created Unicorn Frappucinos that change colouur when you stir them. And unicorn toast became trendy in 2016 when Adeline Waugh put coloured cream cheese toast on her blog ''Vibrant anf Pure''.
Unicorn star mania
Stars love unicorns and use social media to prove it. The unicorn pool-float became a best-seller after Taylor Swift posted an instagram photo of her on a winged horse pool float in 2015, Stars like Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lopez and Margarot Robbie like to wear unicorn onesies, jackets and dresses.
Unicorn fashion
Today we associate the unicorn with magical rainbow colours, glitter and sparkle. Unicorns clothes and accessories are considered cool. Girls colour their hair in rainbow colours and use unicorn beauty products and body glitter. There are even YouTube tutorials on how to get the unicorn look!
